The reality is that probably all governments from the beginning of time have cooperated with organized crime.

The strategy in a nutshell is this: hire the strongest gang to maintain order in your kingdom to be the police since they are already fully familiar with the crime because they are the ones behind it all. It is good public relations when the crime drops because of your leadership. They then throw other competing gangs and little amateur criminals under the bus and end up with a monopoly on crime. Epstein was protected by our government because he was one of our chosen evildoers.
What this leads to is a single underworld gang that is too big to fail. The criminals become the other side of the coin of our justice system. The cops are one face but the robbers on the dark side of the moon are the American mafia (a term that is never even whispered anymore).
It is always made to seem like crime is committed by foreigners: the Italians with Al Capone, the Jewish mafia with Meyer Lansky, The Mexican drug cartel with Pablo Escobar. And if we did not have our superb FBI hot on the trail we would be overrun with vice, right?
Like all epiphanies, once you are aware of the one explanation that ties all the inconsistencies of (what passes for) history together then the inconsistencies start to make sense.
